Bel & Nev
At first glance, Bel and Nev might not seem an ideal place to take your little ones – it’s not the biggest space around and you might wonder how on earth you could get a buggy in. But trust us, appearances can be very deceptive. Not only is it tardis-like inside (we’ve seen at least three buggies in at once), the service is so warm, and Bel and Nev, co-owners of the eponymous café, so welcoming to families that you’ll be back again and again. It’s obviously catching too – the customers are all so helpful they’ll be falling over themselves to help you squeeze in, get you a high chair etc.
Bel and Nev, the co-owners of the eponymous café have hit on a fantastic formula in a spot often overlooked by locals looking for more than the standard greasy spoon. Their menu is short and sweet and very delicious, and includes breakfasts, salads, sandwiches and a range of home baked treats. Everything on the menu is a hit and most options go down pretty well with kids too (especially the banana bread!), but our top tips would be the porridge with coconut and honey for breakfast, smashed avocado with chilli jam on toast with poached eggs for lunch and the salted caramel brownies – without doubt the best we’ve ever had. Oh, and the coffee is really good too, with plenty of alternatives for the lactose intolerant amongst you.
Although the food is in itself a reason to visit, it’s the atmosphere that will keep you coming back. Bel and Nev (and all of the staff in fact), are genuinely some of the nicest people you’ll meet, and as parents to the lovely Bea, are very understanding of the mess and noise that comes with little customers. In fact, we reckon you’ll feel so at home here that it would be really easy to forget where you are and leave without paying (and they’d probably be pretty understanding if you did, not that we’re advocating that of course…!).
